Gençlerbirliği, founded on 14 March 1923 by pupils excluded from their school side, competes in Turkey's Süper Lig and plays at the 20,560-seat Eryaman Stadium in Ankara. The club's red-and-black colours are said to derive from either available fabrics at a local tailor or Anatolian steppe poppies, and it has long carried the nickname Ankara Rüzgârı, or Wind of Ankara.
